Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect on my first day of training?

You will be welcomed into our gym and walked through training, at your pace. You can choose to sit and observe or you can sign a waiver and jump right in. You will be taught in a safe, controlled setting and you will not be pushed to do anything you are not ready to do. We train everyone from 6 year old kids to 65 year old women, top athletes to people just trying to get in shape. All you need to bring is a water, mouthpiece (optional) and a great attitude.

What do I need for class? What should I wear?

Depending on which class you attend, you will need the proper attire. Always choose clothes without pockets or hoods and that have a snug fit. For “gi” jiu jitsu you will need a Jiu Jitsu Gi. (if you do not have one yet, show up to class anyways, we have loaners and would rather have you in here learning). For nogi training, it is best to have shorts and a rash guard, or leggings with no pockets. For Striking and MMA, wear something similar to nogi jiu jitsu. Pockets, hoods and loose clothing hurt people. You will also want a water bottle, mouth piece (optional), Sandals to easily slip on to leave the mat, Cup/ Groin Protection (optional), Great Attitude- NEVER OPTIONAL.

What is Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu is a form of ground fighting, like wrestling, where the goal is to submit or tap out your opponent. It was made famous by Royce Gracie who used Jiu Jitsu to defeat all of the other martial arts in the very first UFCs. In jiu jitsu you use submissions like armbars and chokes to cause the other person to tap out and give up. It is a great sport to learn and compete in, but it is also great to learn for self defense because you can defend yourself with these same techniques. And because most of these moves rely on leverage, and not just pure strength, it can be used to stop a larger attacker by breaking a bone or choking them.

What are striking/ mma classes?

We have a fundamentals striking class for people who are new to striking and we have an advanced class for people with more experience/ skill. In striking/ mma classes we will use bags, mitts, solo/ partner drills and sparring to sharpen our skills. We will also occasionally work on mma striking (ground and feet).

I don’t like class settings, are there 1 on 1 and private lessons available?

Yes, we can work out private lessons for MMA, Jiu Jitsu, Striking and Self Defense. Prices range from $30-$50 per hour. But, 1 hour of private lessons with a good coach is equivalent to weeks of training. Contact us for availability.
